“It was a game changer for her”
In February, Susan VanDeventer’s stepmother started coughing up blood.
At the time, her stepmother was in Louisiana, where she spends the winters with another one of her daughters. Her family rushed her to the small, local hospital nearby. They quickly realized that she needed to be transferred to a larger hospital in Baton Rouge.
Some existing conditions made it difficult for the hospital staff to perform an endoscopy (the insertion of a long, thin flexible tube with a light and camera) to locate the site of the bleeding. And for a variety of reasons, they wanted to avoid any of the surgical options for her stepmother, if possible.
Ultimately, the decision was made to use Hemospray® Endoscopic Hemostat, which is sold by Cook Medical’s Endoscopy specialty, to try to stop the bleeding.
It worked.
And it worked so well that they decided they didn’t need to do a second scope and sent her home within 48 hours.
When Susan, the Clinic director for the Cook Family Health Center in Bloomington, spoke to her afterward, her stepmom told her, “They used something called ‘Hemospray.’”
“I was like, ‘Well, that something called Hemospray is made by Cook,’” Susan said. “That was really cool!”
It was also an emotional moment for the two women.
“We both got a little tearful,” Susan said. “I have read the patient stories and the stories by employees who know someone who has been treated with Cook products—but for it to happen to somebody in your own family is just really cool. For her to have such an amazing outcome in a situation that really could have went the other way pretty easily—that was also awesome.”
“It was a game changer for her.”
