Setting the pace: Cook sponsors virtual races

Whether you walk, jog, or run, for health or fun, you can be sure it’s for a good cause when you sign-up for one of Cook’s sponsored races. Two of those races are the Hoosiers Outrun Cancer and the Cook Medical Women’s Mini Marathon.

Due to COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines, both of these events will be “virtual races” this year. Instead of large groups running and walking together on one course, each individual participant will be able to complete their distance on their own. No matter where you live in the world, because these races are virtual, you can take part in a Cook-sponsored race. Whether you’re inside on a treadmill or outside on a trail, all you have to do is to keep track of your distance, record your time, and report it back through the race website when you’ve reached the virtual finish line. These events will continue to provide runners with ways to participate in the unique race traditions, as well as mailing individuals their shirts, bibs, and race medals.

Hoosiers Outrun Cancer

This year marks the 21st annual Bloomington Health Foundation’s Hoosiers Outrun Cancer (HOC) 5k. On September 26, runners and walkers alike will set out to complete their 3.1 mile trek in honor of loved ones affected by cancer and to raise money for the Bloomington Health Foundation HOC Cancer Support Fund.

HOC “supports members of our local community [in southern Indiana] who are fighting cancer including patients, their family, and their friends.”1

The early registration deadline for this run ends on August 30, and the team and general online registration ends on September 28. While registering, you can also join our team, Team Cook! To check out more information on the race website, click here.

You can sign-up and virtually join others and “run in memory of a loved one, walk in honor of someone battling cancer, or simply gather a fun team for a fantastic cause!”1 Don’t forget to use the hashtags #CookOutrunsCancer and #RunningTogether to show your support and photos on race day!

Cook Medical Women’s Mini Marathon

“Now in its 22nd year, Cook Medical Limerick Women’s Mini Marathon is firmly established as the premier women’s running event in Limerick and the Midwest of Ireland. Over 3,000 women of all ages and abilities participate in this event at the end of September every year.”2

This two-day event allows participants to sign-up for either a 5k or 10k race, and will take place on September 26-27. Whether you decide to walk, run, or jog the 3.1 or the 6.2 miles, with every step, you will help support the 12 charities paired with the race this year.

This year’s charities include: ADAPT Domestic Abuse Services, Barnardos, Breast Cancer Ireland, Cliona’s Foundation, Daughters of Charity Lisnagry, Limerick Animal Welfare, Limerick Suicide Watch, Mid-Western Cancer Foundation, Milford Hospice, Novas, Pieta House, and St. Gabriel’s School.

With Cook as the mini marathon’s title sponsor, and with registration for the race now open, we are hoping to encourage as many employees as possible to take part in this event. We will be awarding prizes for the team with the best average completion time for the 5k and 10k event and for the team that can demonstrate the best team spirit. As this is a virtual event this year, we encourage Cook employees globally to take part.

To build awareness for the event and help raise funds for the race charities, we encourage you to share your training posts on social media and use the hashtags #RunTogether and #CookMiniMarathon.
