Nontraditional high school graduates celebrate new life options

Editor’s note: The Indiana High School Equivalency (HSE) is an exam that allows adults who did not earn a high school diploma through traditional schooling to earn a diploma, which is a minimum requirement for most jobs and for enrollment in higher education. In 2016, Cook in Bloomington partnered with the Broadview Learning Center for Adults through the local school system to provide current and future employees opportunities to earn their diploma while working part-time. Cook’s program allows individuals to work part-time at Cook while spending the remainder of the work day in class to prepare for the exam. After successfully earning their HSE diploma, these employees are then offered a full-time position at Cook.

Recently I had the chance to attend the spring graduation ceremony for the Indiana High School Equivalency program. Seeing a group of our employees graduate (plus one who joined Cook after passing his exam) and hearing their stories really was truly inspiring. Going back to school is never easy, and we are extremely proud to have these folks at Cook. Their determination is fantastic.

Last year, as part of My Cook Pathway, we partnered with Broadview Learning Center in Bloomington to provide current and future Cook employees a chance to earn their high school diplomas. There are many reasons why some adults might not have finished school on a normal schedule, and this program offers them a chance to reach that goal. Having a high school diploma is an asset that can never be taken away. It will increase their earning potential and lead to further education. Their success will help them take the next step on their pathway at Cook, and they will hopefully serve as motivators for others to continue their education.

The achievements of these graduates have attracted some attention. The program was recently recognized by the Indiana Association for Adult Education. And last week, Herald-Times reporter Kurt Christian visited Park 48 to learn more about the program and meet some of the participants. You can read the article he wrote here:
