Keeping you and your pet healthy
In part one of PetZone 2020, we shared some of the possible health benefits of interacting with animals, including how looking at photos of pets can positively impact you! Along with the benefits, it is important to remember that in order to best enjoy the benefits a pet can bring to your life, it’s beneficial to stay healthy and safe around animals too, for you, your pets, and your family. And so, here are some basic guidelines that can help:1
Wash your hands – After playing with, feeding, or cleaning up after your pet, washing your hands can help reduce the risk of getting sick from germs that pets can carry. It is also recommended to wash your hands after leaving areas where animals live (coops, barns, stalls, etc.), even if you did not touch an animal.
Keep your pet healthy – Whether you have a dog, cat, horse, parakeet, gerbil, bearded dragon, or other fun pet, providing regular, lifelong veterinary care is important for keeping your pet and family healthy. Contact your veterinarian if you have any questions about your pet’s health or if you think your pet may be sick.
Practice good pet hygiene – Practicing good pet hygiene is another way to help prevent the spread of germs between pets and people. One recommended practice is to keep pets and their supplies out of the kitchen, and disinfect pet habitats and supplies outside the house when possible.
Teach children how to interact with animals – While pets can teach children compassion and responsibility, it is important to provide supervision for animal interactions, especially for children under the age of five and for kids who might be interacting with a new animal for the first time.
Keep wildlife wild – As cute and cuddly as many wild animals are, it is important to avoid touching wild animals to reduce the risk of illness and injury. If you are ever concerned about the safety of a wild animal, you should contact a local wildlife rehabilitation facility.

Photo galleries
A special thank you to everyone who submitted photos and made PetZone 2020 possible! We hope that you and all of our readers enjoy the second set of photo galleries below.
Peaches is a cheeky Cavoodle – the spoiled youngest of the family. Because we are in lockdown in Melbourne, Australia, we have had lots of exploring close to home time.
Since lockdown, Melbournian kids have had an opportunity of building Spoonvilles, and on one of our walks - because although I’m 4-years-old, I'm still a little puppy at heart - I was highly intrigued by all these weird colours and shapes in the ground. Mummy decided to take a picture, and I sat as still and pretty as I could (for a cheeky little Cavoodle 😊 ).
-Sonia OBrien, Cook Australia
My buddy “Max” (AKC Registered: English Bulldog “Maximus Porkchop”). Nick Name: Jimmy 2 Lips. Max, is my “best friend,”and I’ve never had another friend like him in my life. Every day with him has been an adventure, one that will make you happy, sad, worried, mad, excited and glad. He is a what I like to call a “Movie/Rock Star”. Everywhere you take Max people want to meet him and want to hug and kiss him and he is always very obliging. The more they make over him, the happier and sillier he gets.
-Joseph E. Stovall Jr., Cook Polymer Technology (CPT)
This is our beautiful Chocolate Lab, Molly. She loves to chase tennis balls and swim in the pool, both at the same time. In this picture she is patiently waiting for one of the grandchildren to throw the ball into the pool for her.
-Kimberley Paterson, Cook Canada
On the left is Eloise Pearl, the sweetest fluff head you will ever meet, and on the right are our Christmas kitties, B and Cali. <3 -Keely Sims, AMER CSD
Bo is a 6-year-old mongrel who was adopted when he was just a few months old. He weighs literally half of my weight and we live in Hong Kong. In the summer we go for small walks on the beach and in the winter, we go for long hikes! Bo does not like thunder, loves going to the dog park, and is very chilled until he hears someone outside the door.
One of the photos has the Hong Kong skyline behind Bo at Quarry Bay pet park. The beach one is at Sai Kung Sha Ha beach. The inside photo is at our apartment.
-Christina Lam, Cook Hong Kong
Meet my dog Buddy the Dachshund!
-Christopher Faught, Cook Spencer
Bunny and Binx are very loving. Some of their favorite things are food, naps, and walks in their stroller.
-Chelsea Marcinkus, Cook Spencer
Our fuzzy little teddy bear, Emma, turned 11 on October 16th, and still acts like a puppy. She’s an amazing companion who comforts us when we’re down and celebrates with us when we’re happy! She loves naps on the bed and dinner time!
And while it might seem funny to call a fish a pet, I needed a desk-mate during COVID! Noodle is about 1 year and 2 months old, and he loves his Betta log and making bubble nests.
-Holly Claire Kannady, Park 48
This is Asher, our beloved Dutch Shepherd mix.
Asher passed away this year in early November. He was a rescue dog who overcame abuse and numerous injuries. After moving to Bloomington and becoming an adored part of our family, we put his innate drive to use to search for missing people in the wilderness and in collapsed structures. In 2017, Asher obtained the highest level of certification available from the IDHS Search & Rescue Academy in Canine Disaster Search capability. He assisted in locating a number of different lost persons around South-Central Indiana as a volunteer of Argus Canine Search and Rescue.
While we had anticipated Asher to be able to be a skilled volunteer resource for the broader community for a few more years, and a valued family member for even longer, he was diagnosed with a rare cancer. Asher was surrounded with love and will be most deeply missed.
-Erin Duff, Park 48
The first picture is Chopper, my Pit Bull mix, and I think the sign says it all. He is one spoiled dog, but very special to us, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
The second picture is Blaze, my Bearded Dragon. He is patiently waiting for his breakfast. He definitely has a personality of his own.
-Tina Nidiffer, Cook Canton
Cheech is an 8-year-old Chihuahua. He was a little brother to Picasso (who you may have seen in a past Petzone) up until this year when we sadly had to say goodbye to Picasso at 15 years old. He has taken to being a big brother to his 2-year-old human sister, Quinn. He loves belly rubs; rolling on his back; barking at deer, squirrels and turtles; and any and all types of food and treats – especially when it falls off the dinner table. Fun fact: his tongue is so long (or his face is so small) that he can lick his eyes when he cleans his face.
-Kyle and Lyndsey Caird, Park 48
We like to think that beauty is back in Limerick, thanks to our cat, Beauty!
-Ingrid Klug-Danaher, Cook Ireland
This is Charlie, my office buddy. He loves bringing me his squeaky toys as soon as I join Webex calls. He also loves sleeping (a lot), belly rubs and snuggles. He’s been keeping me sane throughout this pandemic. Taking him for a walk after work is the best way to clear my head.
-Isabell Schildt, Cook Ireland
On the left is our 13.5 lb., 7-year-old Yorkie Poo named Charlie. Charlie likes to jump up onto the bed while we are sleeping and crawl under the covers with us. If it is cold out, he stays down by our feet but on occasion I wake up and he has his little head resting on my pillow right next to mine and is fast asleep. I got up and he stayed in the bed and I snapped this photo of him.
On the right is Butkus, our 4-year-old, 75 lb. Goldendoodle. He is definitely a Daddy’s dog as he waits for me to come home from work or the store by sitting and watching for me out the front window. He is truly a gentle giant and is very polite – he asks me several times (tapping me with his paw on my leg) before coming up to lay on top of / curl up on my lap in my recliner.
-Don Sandmore, Cook Medical Technology (CMT)
This is my puppy, Henry. He is a Boxer. He got his name because he had a 'H' on his nose.
-Candy Swartz, Cook Vandergrift
My Australian Shepherd named Jupp says, “Hi!” to all Cookies all over the world. Stay healthy and positive. ❤️
-Katja Meyer-Reger, Cook Switzerland
We rescued Layla in 2014. While living in Connecticut, she was an outdoor cat. Moving to Florida, for my job with Cook, presented several more challenges and dangers for her. Fortunately, she’s a very content house cat now! She’s the queen of the house, for sure! -Sue Banning, Florida
Our babies, Maggie, who is a Miniature Pincher all cuddled up on the left, and Toby, who is a Chiweenie.
-Becky Lyons, Cook Winston-Salem
Keno is 4-month-old Goldendoodle. He loves to run, and with his brother Sully and occasionally chase rabbits and play in the mud.
-Tanya Price, Cook Winston-Salem

-Chelsey Duricic, Cook MyoSite
"Can I chew on this, Dad?" asked Milo.
-Kevin Cain, Park 48
Meet Tilly, the cuddle monster!
-Ashley Grubb, Cook Inc.
Stanley is a 3-year-old German Shepard mix, and Riley is a 7-year-old Boston Terrier mix. These two best friends enjoy running outside with each other, watching television with their parents and tearing up every stuffed animal they can. -Jacob Freeman, AMER DC Warehouse
Callie is a 1-year old Tortie Calico. Her favorite toy is a shoe string, and she carries it everywhere with her. She loves to help us when we bring furniture home that needs building.
-Tayrin Nail, Ellettsville North
Osiris is a 3-year-old bully-breed mix who is a complete baby. We adopted him when he was 10 months old and continues to amaze us with how much like a person he is. A fan of all animals, Osiris is great with humans, dogs, cats, and even the toad that lives outside our front door. He sits like a human on car rides and will use human pillows if you don’t beat him to them! Osiris turns the corners of his mouth up, like a smile, when we bring out his sweater in colder months and does all the motions to facilitate “getting dressed.”
Elora is new to the family, adopted at the end of July from the Bloomington shelter. She was a stray and is estimated to be a year old. Elora has made herself quite at home. Although the basement is her big room, she uses the cat door to come upstairs and join the family on the couch. She prefers the attention of Osiris and bonded with him quite quickly. While it might look like she is meowing for him to move out of her spot, in the photo she was asking for attention. A minute after that picture was taken, she jumped up and laid by his head to exchange some affectionate grooming. -Sarah Beth Sanchez, Park 48
My very cute and cheeky 6-year-old Parsons Jack Russell Terrier, Peggy. 😍 She loves to chase squirrels and tennis balls!-Zoe Sharp, Cook Ireland
Shadow pretending to “bee kind & humble” due to the empty food dish.
-Doug Hill, Cook MyoSite
The adorable Boxer on the left is Josh’s darling, Leia Marie. She is five years old, and her favorite things in the world are snuggling and napping. We love when she comes to visit us.
Cuddled up next to Leia is her little sister, Primrose Jyn, a six month old bundle of energy that we adopted earlier this year. She is incredibly smart and ridiculously goofy. Prim loves to play with her siblings, especially with her brother, Newt.
We adopted Newt Kenobi, the fluffy kitten on the bottom right, earlier this year. Newt and Prim are only a few days a part in age, and are constantly causing a ruckus and playing with each other. Newt loves to garden, in the sense that he enjoys digging up his mom’s indoor plants.
Shawn Guster, the majestic floof on the top right, is the ruler of our little kingdom. He is three years old and part Maine Coon. Some of his favorite pastimes include gazing out of windows, playing in the snow, and curling up in the sun for a classic cat nap.
-Ally Stanfield and Josh McGuire, Park 48
Simon says, “You know you want to pet me instead of answering that email."
-Caitlin Davis, Park 48
My name is Maverick (AKA Mavery)! I am a 15-week-old Blue Merle Pomsky (50% Pomeranian, 50% Husky) puppy. I love eating leaves (and anything else Mom tells me not to) and the cooler Fall weather. I know four tricks (sit, paw, lay down and high five). I like to have conversations with my toys (only with the ones that talk back of course!). I have a reoccurring case of nighttime zoomies. I enjoy trips to Petco where I am known for shoplifting only the best items from shelves within my reach. My claim to fame, “I haven’t found a toy I can’t destroy. 😊”
-Marcy Guerra, PH.D., Cook MyoSite
My dog’s name is Cooper, and he is a Cockapoo. He loves his naps (he is not a morning dog), and he also walks in the woods, swimming in the stream nearby and fetch is his favorite game.-Aileen Kilmartin, Cook Ireland
We welcomed home our chocolate lab Zoey earlier this year. She is now 5 months old and loves being outside to watch the world go by.
-Jonathan and Rebecca Sheets, Park 48
Yui and Thor are both rescues. Yui (Black and Brown) is 5 years old. She is an American Bull dog mix. She loves to eat, sleep and cuddle. She wants all attention on her. Thor (Black and White) is 3 years old and a Pit Bull. Thor loves to run and play fetch. He gets the zoomies anytime he is outside. At night he likes to be tucked into the blankets. Thor was found by the Winston-Salem Animal Control wandering the streets, and he was brought to the Forsyth County Humane Society. Yui was rescued as a puppy from a family that had no clue their dog had become pregnant. The family worked with a rescue group to help rehome all the puppies and the rescue group helped spay the family’s dog.
-Brooke Parrish, Cook Winston-Salem
This is Koji, named after the composer Koji Kondo, of Nintendo fame.
-Julie Campbell, Park 48
This is Daisy Mae Cotti (left)! She just turned 15-years-old on September 15th! We celebrated her birthday with a puppy cake! She likes long naps in her cuddle cup, car rides, snuggles, and getting her hair done!
Chase (center), AKA Chaser Racer Party Pants, Beagle-Butt, polka-dot legs, just turned 5 years old in July. He enjoys posing for pics, jumping like a deer, eating, and being chased around and annoyed by his sister Molly Malone. He has middle child syndrome, so he wants lots of attention and gets it!
And this is our Corgi-butt pup, Molly Malone (right). She will be 2 in January. She is full of energy, spunk and is living her best life!!
-Amada Cotti and Leah Matthews, Park 48
Morse is a 3-year-old Border Collie mix that we adopted from the White River Humane Society. We got him right before the COVID lock downs and he helps us through the tough times. He loves to play and learn new tricks.
-Jeff Lee, Cook Polymer Technology (CPT)
This is Miss Marley. We are crazy people who added a 12-week-old Newfie puppy to our family of 2 small children and 2 other pups! She is super sweet and likes to poop in the house.

-Melanie Smith, Cook Vandergrift
The little lady on the left is Lilly, and Bo is the handsome German Shepard on the right.

Lilly is almost 8-years-old. We adopted her when she was only 7-months-old. She is a Yellow Lab, she has the sweetest demeanor, and she is adorably needy. Best PUP EVER!
-Kristy McCorkle, Cook Vandergrift
Here’s my pandemic puppy! His name is Mack, and he’s a Bullmastiff. He’s brought me great joy and challenges in this ever-changing weird world we now live in.
-Tricia Galassi, Cook Research Inc. (CRI)
This is our kitty, Freya, or Frey-Frey, as we like to call her. She adopted us. She showed up one day and never left, so we took her in. She’s been with us for 3 years now.
-Alicia Headley, Park 48
This is Marshall, left, named after a character from the show "Paw Patrol." He is a 3-year-old Pit Bull mix. We adopted him from the shelter when he was one year old. He is full of energy and loves to play. He is a big part of our family.
On the right, is Keeper. She is 13 years old, and she is a mixed breed. She is definitely a "keeper," and that's why my son named her that. She is precious and is a big part of our family.
-Katie Tamer, Cook Winston-Salem
Hi! My name is Zoe! I’m a 9-month-old crossbred. I was abandoned close to a dumpster when I was born. I was then brought to an animal shelter. A few months later, I found a family and joined my mum Sabina just after the Italian lockdown was over. I’m very active!!! I like playing with my friends, swimming, eating biscuits (slurp) and also sleeping … sometimes. Oh, I really really love kissing my mum! She is so tasty. 😊 -Sabina Sozzani, Italy
Kaydo is an approximately 3 years old American Bulldog who was rescued from the shelter in Vancouver. He had challenges socializing with other dogs initially because, he was anxious and unsure. Currently he’s over his fears and loves to run around and play with dogs and humans alike. He’s super happy and playful with endless energy. He is a destroyer of toys.
-Peter Leblanc, Cook Canada

-Sam Hedrick, Cook Canton
Byron is a 6-year-old Irish Setter (top, left), and George is a mini poodle (top, right). While Byron is still very jealous of George, they are learning to play together.
-Barbara Tramajoni, Italy
Nesta is 2 years old, and this little love bug’s birthday is Valentine's Day.
-Marie Johnson, Cook Winston-Salem
Belle is my sweet lovable 2.5-year-old baby. She has no idea what personal space is as she's always wanting to sit on me right under my chest.
Sunny is younger than Belle by about 1.5 years. She's the terror in the house, always getting into stuff that she shouldn't, and she's knows when she's in trouble. She also is very lovable, but it's usually toward my boyfriend.
-Mary Collins, Cook Spencer

-Mark Clum, Park 48
Here is our 8-month-old, Red Bone Hound mix puppy, Rufus. We rescued him when he was 9 weeks old. Hopefully he will soon get use to his adult teeth and stop chewing on everything.
