Keeping you and your pet healthy

In part one of PetZone 2020, we shared some of the possible health benefits of interacting with animals, including how looking at photos of pets can positively impact you! Along with the benefits, it is important to remember that in order to best enjoy the benefits a pet can bring to your life, it’s beneficial to stay healthy and safe around animals too, for you, your pets, and your family. And so, here are some basic guidelines that can help:1

  • Wash your hands – After playing with, feeding, or cleaning up after your pet, washing your hands can help reduce the risk of getting sick from germs that pets can carry. It is also recommended to wash your hands after leaving areas where animals live (coops, barns, stalls, etc.), even if you did not touch an animal.
  • Keep your pet healthy – Whether you have a dog, cat, horse, parakeet, gerbil, bearded dragon, or other fun pet, providing regular, lifelong veterinary care is important for keeping your pet and family healthy. Contact your veterinarian if you have any questions about your pet’s health or if you think your pet may be sick.
  • Practice good pet hygiene – Practicing good pet hygiene is another way to help prevent the spread of germs between pets and people. One recommended practice is to keep pets and their supplies out of the kitchen, and disinfect pet habitats and supplies outside the house when possible.
  • Teach children how to interact with animals – While pets can teach children compassion and responsibility, it is important to provide supervision for animal interactions, especially for children under the age of five and for kids who might be interacting with a new animal for the first time.
  • Keep wildlife wild – As cute and cuddly as many wild animals are, it is important to avoid touching wild animals to reduce the risk of illness and injury. If you are ever concerned about the safety of a wild animal, you should contact a local wildlife rehabilitation facility.
